I'm starting to think about the next update. It will mostly be adjustments to the multiplayer changes in the last update, but I may add a couple of new features as well.
First off, handicaps. I think they do work to keep the keep balanced between players of different skills, but there are a couple of problems. 1. I will add an opt-out for the system for players that like a challenge. 2. I will change it to only take into account the results of the last 8 games, and modify the calculation system so the handicaps converge quicker. Currently they change far too slowly which means even if you lose 10 games in a row, you still may have a handicap of zero if you won lots of games in the past.
I'm also thinking of changing a couple of the new spells such as Blessing and Treasure Chest to work differently. Rather than being spells, they will some kind of items that you discover and activate. More on that at a later date.
For the Transpose spell, I've come to the conclusion that it has little use unless it transposes something into a very weak or very strong creature. So I may limit the types of creatures you get to exclude the 'middle of the range' creatures. Also I'm considering make it a 'found' spell scroll that costs almost nothing to cast.
I'm aware there have been a couple of out-of-sync games recently. Two in the last two months. It is not clear what is causing them. It gets very complicated when people miss turns and there are players simultaneously playing the current round whilst another is watching 2 rounds back from turns they missed. For the next version I'm adding a recovery system. I'm still working on the details, but hopefully this will reduce the impact of out-of-sync games.
I've added a new item, Dragons Tooth. You throw it at an empty spot on the ground and three armed skeletons will spawn. I'm still deciding how you get this item. Possibly only as a magic reward (Magic Wood or Blessing) or maybe it is a 'difficult to craft' item. I may also make the Skeleton warriors have a limited life span to limit how powerful it is.
Also note that the update has had a slight delay as I'm moving house at the moment and there is a lot to do!
A bug (out-of-sync bug?): Currently I'm playing a game against 2 opponents, deathcabforkiki and slapples22. I received two reminders and I have 11 hours left to play, but the game is no longer listed (no active multiplayer game)!
So the birth of my daughter and moving to a new home got in the way of this, but I have spent the last couple of days working through the update, (and as usual spending hours installing infinite Mac updates just so I can build the game on iOS). It is coming!
Just wanted to say that this is such a great game! I bought it when it first came out but I'm afraid it's been years since I last played... Noticing the update, I decided to download it and fire it up... to be impressed all over again. And now not only me but my 8 year old son as well! HE LOVES IT!
Thanks for your work keeping the game alive and congratulations on the birth of your daughter!
Thanks Blanchot. It's always a great reward to hear a from someone who enjoyed the game, and I've had a few parents tell me they played it with their child, which was unexpected, but fantastic to hear!
Game has been deleted. Let me know if there are any problems. The out-of-sync problem came from me doing a small fix for Dragons Tooth. Unfortunately Cedric did not update the game (I had wrongly assumed most devices update within a day or so), so two of his games went out of sync. I'll add more control over this in future to stop it happening.
I probably will support Android for future games - I just wish it wasn't so damn frustrating!
I think the "no handicap" option has a bug. I chose this for a recent game and see stats like "15 HC +255" for players. Slapples (prob the best player in the game) has a HC of 20 HC+255. Players in this island map game are Slapples22, Magnus, Maxnozz and Stinky the Younger (for troubleshooting).
