I just picked up the game and really like it. I notice some elements here and there that make me think of the Warmachine table top game.. coincidence?

Glad you like it! I've never played Warmachine. I've also had people ask if it was influenced by Fire Emblem, but I've never played that either.
The only real influences are the old Julian Gollop 8-bit games from the 80's and 90's, Chaos and Lords of Chaos.
